IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE TO EAT HEALTHY!
This is something we hear all the time in practice as Health Coaches.
Especially when working with young families on a budget in the *LEAN Start Program or Our Prime Timers on a fixed budget in the * Prime Time Health Series. Many prime timers who are active Adults in their 40’s, 50’s and beyond are able to invest in an IRA to save money for retirement. However, if you do not have your health you won’t be able to enjoy your retirement. One way to save for your health is investing in the things that will promote your well being as you get older such as Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude and Nutrition. Many of us don’t appreciate good health until we lose it. It’s never too late to reverse the signs of aging and use your food and activity as medicine and proper fuel for your body.
Organic food usually does cost more but you don’t have to buy organic to eat better. Luckily more stores now are selling organics for better prices. Keep in mind when organic is too high buying locally fresh veggies is a good option as well as fresh veggies retain more of the nutrients lost over shipping time and transport. Eating conventionally grown fruits and veggies washed in a simple solution of vinegar, water and lemon juice is better than not eating fruits and veggies at all. Don’t underestimate the power of frozen fruits and veggies that are frozen at the peak of freshness. Good deals can be found in the frozen food section.
There are many ways to eat healthy on a budget. Meal planning, freezing meals and crock-pot cooking are just some of the ways. I realize shopping and meal prep takes time and planning. I know at first it can seem overwhelming especially for busy working professional and mom and dads on the go. I promise you if you invest time in a few strategies and come up with a few weekly go to meals, you can do this. Over time it it wont seem like an extra chore.
Health Coaches and many local stores now offer services such as:
Grocery Store Tours, Recipe Revamps and Pantry Makeovers to teach proper label reading and to help you see what things you can improve upon. We never tell people to throw out food. We simply provide tips in how to replace existing items with a better choice. When you think about it, the trade- off of junk and processed foods to healthy foods counteracts some of the expense of whole organic foods. Tip: Don’t ever try to overhaul your daily diet in one fell swoop. Start small, with one small change and add other changes over time. Example maybe for you and your family having just one home cooked dinner a week is a big change.
I know that if you choose to make your health a priority, together we can find a way.
Budgeting and eating healthy are an exciting creative outlet for me but maybe not for you. I have included a * FREE Tips and Tricks PDF you can download below.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The first wealth is health”. Even though we have money in the bank, if we lose our health, our life may not be meaningful. Most people can afford to spend on luxury in life but are stingy when it comes to taking care their health. All that junk and overly processed food in your system will eventually catch up with you as you age your bodies ability to rid itself of harmful toxins decreases. Basically your own internal garbage disposal system breaks down and wears out. It’s simple: less junk in causes less wear and tear and your system functions properly for a longer period of time. I hope this will convince you that Investing in your health now will keep you out of the hospital later and have less expense in medications as well. Illness wastes more time and is more expensive than wellness.
